Modern Treaties and Land Claims
There are lands in Canada where treaties were never signed and Aboriginal title to land was never extinguished, which has given rise to Modern Treaties and land claims. Most First Nations in B.C. did not negotiate or sign Treaties with the Canadian government, which has led to the creation of a number of Modern treaties in that province. Modern treaties come in several forms, including:
- Comprehensive land claims
- Self-government agreements
- Treaty land entitlement
- Other legal agreements used to recognize Aboriginal rights.
